Why sniff walks matter

Let the nose lead.

A dog’s nose is how they read the world. A sniff walk gives that nose time to work, and it tires a dog out in a gentle way.

  1. 01

What a sniff walk is. A slow walk where the sniffing is the point, not the distance. Your dog stops, smells, moves on and stops again.

  2. 02

Slow pace. Forget the step count. Let your dog take as long as they like at a tree, a fence post or a patch of grass.

  3. 03

Let them choose. Now and then, let your dog pick which way to go at a corner, as long as it is safe.

  4. 04

Long lead in safe places. In open parks away from roads, a longer lead gives your dog room to explore while you stay in control.

  5. 05

A calmer dog after. Sniffing is hard work for the brain, so many dogs come home relaxed and ready for a nap.

Mix a sniff walk into the week alongside faster walks, and watch how your dog settles at home.
