Getting your dog ready for a sitter

A little preparation helps your dog feel safe while you are away, and gives your sitter everything they need.

  1. 01

The meet and greet. Book a visit before your trip, so your dog and sitter can say hello, walk the usual route and learn the house rules together.

  2. 02

Write down the routine. Note meal times and amounts, walk times, where your dog sleeps and any habits, from the favourite toy to the scary bin truck.

  3. 03

Food and medicine. Leave enough food for the whole stay plus a few spare days, and label any medicine with the dose and the time.

  4. 04

Favourite things. Put out your dog’s bed, toys and a worn jumper that smells like you, so the house still feels like home.

  5. 05

A practice visit. Try a short visit or a night with the sitter before a long trip, so the first night away is not the first time they meet.

Leave your vet’s details and a spare lead by the door, and enjoy your trip knowing your dog is in good hands.
