Bath time without the drama
Date:
A clean dog and a calm bathroom.

A bath goes best when everything is ready before your dog is anywhere near the water. Here is how we do it.
- 01
Get everything ready. Lay out towels, a dog shampoo, a jug or hand shower and a non slip mat before you call your dog in, so you never leave them standing wet in the tub.
- 02
Brush first. Brush right down to the skin and work out any knots. Water tightens tangles, so a few minutes with the brush now saves a long, sore session later.
- 03
Lukewarm water. Test the water on the inside of your wrist: it should feel barely warm. Wet your dog from the neck back, and keep water out of the eyes and ears.
- 04
Dog shampoo only. Use a shampoo made for dogs, because their skin is more sensitive than ours. Lather from neck to tail, then wipe the face gently with a damp cloth.
- 05
Rinse well. Rinse until the water runs clear and the coat feels squeaky, not slippery. Leftover shampoo can leave the skin itchy and flaky.
- 06
Towel and keep warm. Squeeze the water out, towel dry and keep your dog somewhere warm until the coat is dry. A cool, low hair dryer helps thick coats if your dog is happy with the noise.
Finish with a treat and plenty of praise, and the next bath will be easier.
