Keeping walks safe on hot days

Early, shady and short.

Melbourne summers turn quickly, and dogs feel the heat sooner than we do. A few small changes keep every walk safe.

  1. 01

Walk early or late. Head out in the cool of the early morning or after the sun drops in the evening, and skip the middle of the day.

  2. 02

The back of the hand test. Hold the back of your hand on the footpath for a few seconds. If it is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for paws.

  3. 03

Shade and water. Choose leafy streets, grass and creek paths over open bitumen, and carry water and a bowl on every walk.

  4. 04

Know the signs. Heavy panting, thick drool, a bright red tongue, stumbling or lying down and refusing to move all mean stop, find shade, offer water and call your vet.

  5. 05

Shorter walks. On hot days a short sniff around the block is plenty. Swap the long walk for a game indoors or a frozen treat.

Flat faced breeds, older dogs and puppies need extra care, so keep their hot day outings especially short.
